If the chillers have different flow requirements (meaning they are different sizes) then intermixing pumps becomes even more complicated. It can be done using VFDs on the pumps. The BAS can be preprogrammed with the appropriate pump speed required to deliver the correct flow to each chiller. This allows each chiller to receive its correct flow rate. Other buildings such as hospitals or office buildings with computer, telecommunications or other winter chilled water loads can also take 32 Application Guide AG 31-003-1 advantage of a dual or VFD chiller. The overall result is an increased chilled water pump and pipe capital cost plus higher annual pumping cost.
