In the extreme case, the plunger may come to rest before the finish (opening) of the container is fully formed as depicted in Figure 3, clearly an unacceptable situation. A typical motion profile for a plunger is shown in Figure 4. As shown, the overall motion plunger motion may be divided into distinct phases: Plunger moves to loading position ready to receive next gob Initial plunger up motion as plunger rises quickly to meet the gob Glass distribution as the plunger deforms and displaces the gob forming into a parison Plunger dwell where the plunger holds the shape of the parison as it cools (and contracts) until it becomes stable enough to invert into the blow molds.

In the Blow and Blow process, the hollow interior is created using compressed air (with a mechanical plunger only used to make a small starting dimple in the glass). In the second process type, known as Press and Blow, a mechanical plunger is pressed into the gob to form the hollow interior. The Press and Blow process can be further subdivided into NNPB (Narrow Neck Press and Blow), and WMPB (Wide Mouth Press and Blow) depending upon the type of container (bottle or jar respectively) that is formed.

Model validation test Figure 3 shows the results from a 4 section NIS machine with two gob weights TG (Triple Gob) NNPB production setup using the model. The model was used to setup the gobs for the inner, middle and outer cavities following the same pattern. The outer gob showed more discrepancy than the middle and inner gobs. With feeder needle adjustment, the discrepancy could be reduced within tolerance for the production. Figure 3.
